Hi all, BigCommerce is now available as an app available on all plans!
Jan Knettig
Dear customers,
we see high interest in the BigCommerce app, yet we do not see matching usage of the available Add-on App: https://www.make.com/en/integrations/bigcommerce. We would love to understand the reasons.
Please, let us know in the comments what do you need the BigCommerce app for and what is the reason you decided to not use it or tried and stopped using it or whether you tried but failed to make it work.
Such feedback is really valuable for us as we aim to provide you with the apps you need the way they have value for you.
Natures way
Jan Knettig: This is because the third party integrations suck. They first need you to jump on a sales call with them just to sign up and then I have personally seen the webhooks not working.
Cedric MOURIZARD
Jan Knettig: It's sometimes difficult to bet on a third party provider based on a private app and without any contract or engagement. Customers can have the surprize that the integration stop or anything else for any reasons. Most of the time, they ask us to develop a private app that they owns to secure that. It's usualy not linked to this specific app but for all marketplace app.
Mark Witkowski
Jan Knettig: We were definitely seeking a solution for BigCommerce, but there are two primary reasons why I am not eager to use this App.
First, it is a non-starter to begin using something that is 'free of charge as of now'. That type of open-ended proposition is not something that we can practically use in a production environment. Not knowing what we are getting into is a red flag and is a non-starter for any serious user.
Further, putting trust into a third-party solution is quite different than using something that Make officially supports and stands behind. Sure, we can contact the third-party and complete our own due diligence and make an independent decision; but this barrier is enough to stall adoption and/or turn off would-be users all together.
Some solutions to the items I noted:
- Provide clear pricing and intention of the third-party developer. Is the third-party in business to sell apps or to sell services and apps are a way to garner interest? Be clear so we know what we are getting into and what the true cost of ownership will be. Tell us what we need to know up front so there are no surprises later on down the road.
- Help us to get over the barrier of independently validating third-party apps. Provide us with clarity on:
* What is the data flow and security policies in place?
* Have Make Engineers certified the third-party app to meet certain code and security standards?
* What happens in the event of app abandonment by the third-party -- what is the policy and procedure if/when this occurs?
* How are updates handled and supported? Will support for BigCommerce API changes be properly managed?
Thomas Buckley
Jan Knettig: Hi Jan! We were interested in a Make created BigCommerce set of modules, but we needed a solution sooner and so we ended up using the HTTP modules to create integrations for our customers instead.

Natures way: thank you for sharing your experience. Can you be specific which one didn’t work? There are currently 2 BigCommerce apps - one from Growwstacks.com and one from deepidealab.com
Cedric MOURIZARD: thank you, I understand your need of assurance that the app will keep working. Do you see some model for marketplace apps that would be solving this need? Also, do I understand correctly from your response you are yourself an apps developer?
Mark Witkowski: Thank you very much for your insights. Can you please point to where you read "free of charge as of now"? I am not aware it’s there but if it is, I understand it creates an uncertainty which may be unacceptable.
To your questions:
* What is the data flow and security policies in place?
Only official Make partners with a signed agreement are allowed to submit apps to Marketplace. No other security policies are in place.
* Have Make Engineers certified the third-party app to meet certain code and security standards?
We are certifying 3rd party apps which become built-in in the product. We do not certify Add-on apps (the ones available through Marketplace, such as mentioned BigCommerce).
* What happens in the event of app abandonment by the third-party -- what is the policy and procedure if/when this occurs?
We may either take over ownership of the app or discontinue it while minimizing negative impact on our customers.
* How are updates handled and supported? Will support for BigCommerce API changes be properly managed?
3rd parties are expected to support their apps.
If the app was open source and you could see the code, would that help with any of your concerns? Would you then try the app?
@Thomas Buckley: Understand, thank you for sharing your experience.

Jan Knettig: Thanks for your update and response. Very much appreciate the time you took to read and answer.
Regarding the cost question. The information you provided in the post said: "Enjoy and direct your feedback to its developer growwstacks.com who is offering this app completely free of charge as of now."
Does "free of charge as of now." mean -- it is available now and is free for use. Or, the way I interpreted this as meaning -- is available free for now [indicating that at some point in the future it might carry an additional cost]?
Jan Knettig
Mark Witkowski: Oh, thanks! I forgot about this and didn’t look here - was looking at the website. Well, I should have just wrote "free". They are providing the app for free and there are no intentions to monetize. Yet, it’s good to say that pricing is completely in the hands of our partners, so if they decide to start monetizing the app, we would update the information. So yes, it’s technically possible that a product which is now free make become paid at some point in the future, as you say.
I am genuinely interested in your answer to this question:
If the app was open source and you could see the code, would that help with any of your concerns? Would you then use or at least try the app?
